Captain America The Winter Soldier

Let's just start with saying that this film is simply brilliant. Marvel have a film they can really be proud of here. Part spy movie, part action blockbuster, the directors did a superb job of balancing out some creepy tension and deception of the spy genre with such satisfaction that is often missed from action blockbusters. It's entirely different from the first Captain America film and it's so much better for it, even though I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the first film.

Spoilers are ahead, so if you haven't seen it yet then be careful. I won't spoil too much though.

Part of what made this film stand out from the first, as well as from The Avengers, is that the Cap's fill suite of physical abilities were finally on show. If you thought that he was a little short-changed with his physicality in the Avengers compared to some of the others, then you will be in awe with what he pulls off in The Winter Soldier. The Russo Brothers show Captain America at his best, and he now looks like an actual superhero; kicking guys so hard that they are sent flying, smashing through doors and denting walls when turning a corner running at full speed - the Hulk would have been proud, but not too impressed as he's obviously of far superior strength than Captain America. Unlike in the Avengers, Steve Rogers isn't just a leader, he's the muscle as well.

Showing Roger's superior strength and fighting skill early on also helps make The Winter Soldier look even more impressive. I'd go as far as saying that he's the most terrifying on-screen villain that Marvel have produced so far. Remorseless, unstoppable, highly skilled - he's more than a match for the impressive Captain America. There's no charisma here, he won't be loved like Loki. He' just a stone cold killer. There's not much of a speaking role for him, he lets the action do his talking as he unleashes absolute carnage. He's at his best when going toe to toe with Captain America where neither holds back. The fight scenes are shot superbly and show of how good both characters are.

Then there's the final scenes. The CGI is world class and must have taken up a considerable amount of the films budget.

SHIELD have a major role in the film as expected, but not to a point where you feel that it's a SHIELD film instead of a Captain America film. Chris Evans makes sure that this is a Captain America film first and foremost. The film also has massive ramifications for the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe leading into Avengers: Age of Ultron. Hydra are back and seemingly in full swing, and seeing Arnim Zola return in computer form is an exciting moment. Hopefully we see him appear in future films in his robot body. The mention of Stephen Strange as a threat to Hydra brings renewed hope that we'll get a Doctor Strange film in the future. One thing is for sure, we'll be seeing more from Hydra in the future. Then there's the after credits scene... it's worth staying to see at least the first after credits scene - although it's probably more appropriate to call it a mid credits scene.

In all, this is a must watch Marvel film, even if you're not a fan of Captain America. It goes easily into the top 3 Marvel films so far. The Russo Brother's have made a film that Marvel can be exceptionally proud off.

5 out of 5.
