Two books this week have hit the Marvel chopping block in surprising cancellation news. Both Wolverine and the X-Men and Young Avengers have hit some premature deaths. It is unclear at the moment if these titles are just simply going to be relaunched like most of the Marvel Now titles that have already been cancelled, or if the publisher is going to take a different approach with both of them. It was noted that Wolverine and the X-Men was definitely one of the stronger selling books at the publisher, and Young Avengers has a really strong fan base that is willing to support the book. The other interesting facet involving these two specific cases, is that the status quota is rapidly shifting for both books. In Wolverine and the X-Men’s world, the headmaster may altogether be leaving the title. Could both books be coming back with a slightly different new launch? The answer seems very unclear at the moment. Here is a quote from writer Jason Aaron,

wolvy x-men 42

As seen in the Marvel solicits for February, issue #42 will be the end of my run on WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN. The original plan was for me to write both WatXM and AMAZING X-MEN as sister titles. One dealing with the school, the other with the X-Men from that school going on adventures out in the world. But unfortunately my schedule just didn't allow that. So I've been writing the post-Battle of the Atom arc of WatXM as my goodbye to that series and to the Jean Grey School. Believe me, it wasn't easy for me to step away from this book. I've loved building that school and writing those characters, both the students and the teachers, as much as I've loved anything I've done in comics. But the school itself isn't going anywhere. And I'll still be writing a lot of those same characters over in AMAZING. And I've got lots of other stuff coming up that demanded my time, like THOR and SOUTHERN BASTARDS and some new things I can't tell you about just yet.

And another quote from scribe Kieron Gillen.

What’s the story?

Jamie and my plan was always to do a season telling a contained story, leaving room to continue it if we felt we had something else to say. When the time came around and Marvel asked if we wanted to do more issues, Jamie and I decided we’d actually made our statement, and should leave the stage.

Wolverine and the X-Men is ending with #42, and Young Avengers is ending with #15, both books are shipping in January.
