Rabid 2019 is a slick looking film, full of vibrant colours, apt gore and nods to the master himself, David Cronenberg. The latter is less than subtle, but you can certainly understand why directors/writers Jen & Sylvia Soska (fellow Canadians) put them in; Cronenberg is a genius after all.
Hat tips aside, this remake feels very much its own thing and is a world away from the originals darker tone, making it's very watchable Friday night entertainment.
The story focuses on lead character Rose and her slow transformation from shy girl, whose facial scars suggest a sad backstory, to full on man-eater - literally!
After a motorcycle accident leaves her facially disfigured, Rose is given a highly experimental stem cell graft. The aesthetic results are astounding, but the downside is that shes always hungry... for blood.
The special effects are decent despite the clear budgetary restraints; however it does mean other scenes such as the accident and general scope of the film, have had to be reigned in, which is a shame given how much fun it would have been to see the widespread carnage that is only mentioned in news broadcasts, and shown in a small hospital set.
The performances are a little lacklustre and pure B movie grade, but this is a small gripe in this generally entertaining body horror.
