Ten of the best Comic Artists

Author: Ben Williams

Reading time: 4 minutes

Bare in mind that this is just an opinion. I'd love to say that I'm stating fact here. Also, the reason that it's titled 'Ten of the best' not 'The ten best' is because I know it's bound to miss out artists that other people will claim should be in the list. Let us know through the comments of through Facebook who you'd include that isn't included here. Going purely on art work here...

Mike Mignola

Mike Mignola, the man who created one of my favourite characters of all time - Hellboy. From pure detail, he's no Jim Lee, but he has a certain style that matches everything that he writes. It's simplistic and occasionally blocky, yet it works. If he's just drawn Hellboy I'm not sure I would have included him, but his art on Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was brilliant and really made Gotham a scary looking place, and he's done some cool Batman covers as well.

Frank Miller

The artist most famous for Sin City and his excellent work on The Dark Knight Returns. His job of making Batman seem old was nothing short of brilliant, and his work on Sin City and 300 is always top notch. He has a unique style at times, using just black and white in an either simplistic on one page and then on the next be more detailed. Which ever style he chooses looks great. If for some reason you haven't read The Dark Knight Returns then pick it up and read it.

Ivan Reis

The Brazilian Ivan Reis can do some masterful work. His best known work was on Blackest Night and the follow up Brightest DayThis was followed by working on Aquaman where his work was fully recognised. This is a guy that's worked his way up having worked on such titles as The Mask, Xena, Time Cop, etc, and he just keeps on getting better.

Brian Bolland

The artist that brought us The Killing Joke. What a book to have on your CV of art work. His work with Judge Dredd was very good. His work on drawing the Joker was pure brilliant, and is still held in very high regard. Mainly likes to work on covers, but his forays into drawing a graphic novels worth such as The Killing Joke show's just how talented he is. Makes you wish he'd do a few more high profile ones.

Shane Davis

Probably best known for his most recent work on Superman: Earth One but has also done some fantastic work on earlier pieces. His work on the Earth One series is what sold the book to me, apart from being a massive Superman fan. Something about his work just makes it very pleasing on the eye. Keep an eye out for his next piece of work which will be Shadow Walk for Legendary Comics. If it's anything like his previous work then it'll be worth picking up just to look at.

Lee Bermejo

Just fantastic. The detail that goes into Bermejo's work is unbelievable at times. Considering that the guy is self-taught with little formal training just adds to how amazing this guy is. A true talent. If you haven't seen anything that he's done then you are really missing out.

Jack Kirby

A true old school artist who is easily one of the greats. His work spanned from the Golden Age, through the Silver and Bronze Ages to the Modern Age and his art always looked good. His pages were always brilliantly designed, and that his work could stand up amoung the best across four comic book ages says a lot about his talents.

Joe Kubert

Joe Kuberts best work was when he was producing work that actually looked like a drawing (if you get what I mean, if not see the image below). It's a very unique style and set him apart. Even when he used a more 'comic book feel' he work was nothing short of superb. I'd have loved to see him given a go, even if it was just a mini-series, with one of the big characters.

Michael Turner

Love him. His art was always amazing, and he loved drawing curvy women - always made them look good. He also drew one of my all time favourite pictures, which is his Silver Surfer cover. I also loved how he drew Batman and his cape. His work on Soulfire was pure class, and I've bought some of the graphic novels purely for his art work. A true loss to the comic world.

Jim Lee

I'd buy anything Jim Lee has been the artist on. The awful story Heroes Reborn: Iron Man - got it. The equally awful Heroes Reborn: Fantastic Four - got it. Why did I get them both even though they're bad? Because Jim Lee is amazing when it comes to his art. I don't care for the story of them, I got them to flick through and marvel at how good he is. His newer work is better though. Batman: Hush is a perfect example of just how good he can be.
