Karl Urban talks Dredd 2

Author: Ben Williams

Karl Urban was in Germany at the DestinationStar Trek convention and has excited comic fans around the world by offering an update on a Dredd sequel. Discussions are underway for Dredd 2. Whilst the film wasn't too much of a hit in the cinema, it has been a massive hit since with DVD and Blu-Ray sales still making Dredd appear in sales charts around the world. Not a surprise considering that the film was absolutely brilliant.

Dredd

Karl Urban came on last and one of the first questions asked was if there is any chance of Dredd sequel - it seems that where ever Urban goes, Dredd fans follow... even to a Star Trek convention. Exciting fans, Urban said that "conversations" are taking place between the studio, the director and writer Alex Garland. He also commented that the cinema release of Dredd was badly handled but the film had found its audience on DVD and it has been noticed by the studio.

Good news is that they know where it went wrong when first releasing the film. Even better news is that fans don't care that it went wrong initially as once people saw the film later on (probably around a friends house), they fell in love with it and brought their own copy of Dredd. Fans of the film have kept the hopes of Dredd 2 going and this just shows what a great film it was. Keeping the same backroom members on board, we can only expect Dredd 2 to be at least on par with the first if not better. They clearly know what Dredd is about.

Lionsgate clearly know that they're onto a good thing as well. Cinema sales weren't that bad, but DVD and Blu-ray sales since show that a second film will make money, probably a lot of money. A bit more cash spent on advertising, let all the fans know that a second film is happening, and people will be piling into the cinemas to see it. The studio also can't have missed the massive online petition to get a sequel made as well as numerous sites clamoring for it.

There's such an array of villains to choose from as well. So many great places to visit. We can only hope that these "discussions" keep on growing until a sequel is announced. Personally, I'm still hoping for a trilogy with the final villain being Judge Death. Now that would be epic!
