Star Wars 7-9 Will Not Explore Expanded Universe
Reading time: 1 minute

Since the original trilogy, and the not as good second prequel trilogy, there's been officially licensed books, video games and cartoon series that go through the Star Wars expanded universe. So you can forgive a lot of fans hoping that the new trilogy, being directed by JJ Abrams, would explore some more of the Star Wars Universe. Especially given that any inclusion of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford & Carrie Fisher are considerably older than they were when staring in the original trilogy.
With all three originals set to return, there's been no word yet on whether they will have a major role of just a nice little appearance for fans of the original films. Even with news of them returning, hope of exploring the expanded universe has failed to go away. We do still have the spinoff movies to look forward to, so there shouldn't be too much disappointment.
Simon Kinberg, who’s writing one of the Star Wars spinoff movies and serving as an executive producer of the animated Star Wars Rebels, had an interview with IGN at WonderCon Anaheim.
"You know, it’s not off-limits, and it’s certainly inspiring — I’m working on an animated show for [Lucasfilm] as well, Star Wars Rebels, that will take inspiration from everywhere, but — I know for the movies, the canon is the canon, and the canon is the six films that exist."
He also mentioned that the new films are “all about honoring the original movies, and yet wanting to take a step forward, too, and tell a new story.” Just what we all wanted to hear. I just wish I didn't have to wait almost 2 years until it's released - and that's if there's no delays!
Oh, and I want an official poster. If it looks anything like one of the below I'll be very happy indeed.
Star Wars: Episode VII opens Dec. 18, 2015.
