The Reverse-Flash returns to The Flash this week, but is he the exact same version of the character as last season? What will Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne's character represent in the show this year?

Spoilers for "The Reverse-Flash Returns" Below:

The Reverse-Flash weaves back into the super complicated new Flash continuity.

Eobard Thawne, the original Reverse-Flash proves interesting to the rest of the show in his lightning fast return this episode. I like that Barry has matched some sort of resolve towards Eobard Thawne. Jay acknowledges that maybe we shouldn't trust Harrison -- we know... believe me we know.

Patty you need to let it go.

There's also a really weird scene where Patty tries to backpedal a bit on her relationship with Barry Allen. I'm not sure what she's trying to get at -- and neither does Barry. However Iris almost immediately swoops in and tries to get Barry to reconsider. This unfortunate plot thread rears it's ugly thread through the whole episode.

There's some really complicated plot stuff...

Team Flash is trying to figure out why the death of Eddie doesn't exactly equate to the death of Eobard as a person. Eobard's timeline exists in a weird place, equating to him visiting at a different timeline. Harrison explains that Barry's mother's death is a fixed point for the sake of some sort of plot conclusion that won't wipeout continuity. It's complicated right? This show is really really complicated.

What the what?

Patty's mind games with Barry is downright manipulative, if she didn’t want to leave she just shouldn't have left in the first place. Eobard has become 100% Reverse-Flash. I really like how the show has taken the time to properly seed the character and make him slowly turn into the complete Reverse-Flash. Also, it's nice how Wells represents the not as evil version of The Flash.

Super science fiction...

The Flash is dealing with fixing the different universes and a time paradox. Watching Harrison Wells come into battle with Eobard is one of the best scenes this episode. It's also downright insane that the Reverse-Flash is cooperating with this timeline. Also, Barry wearing his actual suit in the in the lab is a little silly.

Here's a few things that The Flash has to have every episode that we're going to quickly run through.

  • Jay has a lightning fast scene with Kaitlin where he covers up a plot hole.
  • When Wally has his scene with Iris, I guess it gives the two of them something to do.
  • We’re hitting our Big Belly Burger reference for the day.
  • Joe fills Barry with the appointment 'talk.'

Why did Patty call Barry?

Honestly. If she already knew, how would that have helped her. Besides, she broke up with him. Not to mention she had reason in doing so. I understand that The Flash is so focused on him and Iris being together but I could imagine one hundred different ways that this could be done better.

'The Reverse-Flash Returns' was a wonderful episode with one sloppy ending.
