Early look at the 'Darkseid War'

Author: Alexander Jones

Reading time: 2 minutes

The esteemed author and DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns recently announced that the upcoming Justice League title is heading towards an event entitled ‘The Darkseid War’.

Many are running wild with speculation, and also noting that the vent could be very similar to the first arc of the re-launched Justice League title. It can be argued that the storyline took great importance in the DC Universe simply because of how it was positioned. The tale even has a film based on it entitled ‘Justice League: War’. How do we get from the aforementioned War to the Darkseid War you ask? The answer seems unclear either way, Johns has really been positioning Darkseid as an important character over the past few years of the New 52. Whenever there is a strange occurrence in the DCU, there is usually Darkseid's parademons somehow involved.

What is more strange about the story is how fragmented Apokolips is thus far. We have gotten several of the different New Gods (those that are in the same species as Darkseid) in different and fragmented titles. Orion has appeared in Wonder Woman, while the New Gods are having a crossover in the coming Green Lantern books. This is strange, as The New Gods are an unlikely place for Space Cops to run into. The last time that the major Justice League book had a crossover with other titles was ‘Trinity War’. That event was light on plot and mostly an excuse to blend into the next crossover called ‘Forever Evil’. A better example of a true crossover is the Throne of Atlantis story which featured crossover with the Aquaman title proper. That story was so successful, that it is being adapted as the next DC Animated film. While the Darkseid War may not be a crossover epic, it needs to do one thing that the others do not--something different. Instead of a typical fight with Darkseid, readers will likely be hungry for something else. Whatever the War is, let's jump in with open arms!
