Abe Sapien #30 Review

Author: Trevor Dermody

Reading time: 1 minute

This month's Abe Sapien #30: Witchcraft and Demonology tells the story of Gustav Strobl, via the words of a mysterious visitor to Abe Sapien. With the professor retiring only minutes before, a man identifying himself as a researcher bearing an even stranger book. The man tells of Strobl's insidious adventures in life and even after involving his various collusions with demons. BRPD frontman Hellboy makes a brief appearance in the comic and inspires great confidence in Gustav, though this obviously is never validated. Abe Sapien himself plays little into the issue and only appears as the frame for the story, asking questions and thus moving the story along. The issue is very much a lead up to issue #31, titled The Black School, which is also the name of Strobl's first encounter with demons. Issue #31 of Abe Sapien releases on February 10th.

Mike Mignola and Scott Allie write with wizard like skill par usual, but this issue especially made me think twice about shutting off the lights before bed. Specifically, the non chant creepiness of Strbyl sends chills down the spine that thrill and frighten simultaneously. Artist Santiago Caruso sets the scene perfectly in tune with Mignola's words making scenes appear gothic and fantastic. The scenes from Hell are flat out paralyzing which is only made more epic with fantastic color from Dave Stewart. The characters mesh in a way during the scenes on Earth that make the characters a part of their setting, yet it is a bleak setting. This perfectly reflects the necromantic backdrop for the comic and is well recipe bed by this reader.

All in all, the comic is great and I will be eagerly awaiting the next issue, The Black School, on February 10th. With Volume 7 of the series winding down, Abe is sure to be faced with his adversary Strobl for a showdown sure to rock readers.
