America is Receiving The Best Judge Dredd Story Ever Made

Author: Ben Williams

Reading time: 2 minutes

Ask any Judge Dredd fan what the best Dredd story is and you'll generally only find one answer. "Judge Dredd: America". Funnily enough, despite the title, the story has never been available in America before, but it will be.

Judge Dredd: America is the must-have Dredd book that rightly deserves to sit on fans book shelves alongside other great graphic novels. Not read much Dredd? No problem. You don't need to know any continuity, there's no cross-overs, nothing that you need to know before reading this graphic novel at all... well, apart from that you won't be disappointed by it at all. John Wagner's morally difficult tale is complemented by Colin MacNeil's incredible painted artwork, making Mega-City One a place of vibrant hues and sinister shadows.

What makes Judge Dredd: America so special though?

Dredd has never been portrayed as brilliantly as he's shown in this story, and that's odd considering that this is one of the only times that the action is seen from a different perspective than that with which you're usually presented in a Dredd story. This is a Dredd story which focuses more on the citizens than the Justice Dept, making it a real eye opener as to how the state oppresses it's citizens, and why they fight and die for a taste of democracy.

What is the Judge Dredd: America all about?

The story focuses on America Jones and Bennett Beeny, two best friends who grew up living a trouble-free life in a dangerous city, with the odd encounter with a Judge. Time has drawn the two friends apart and when they are reunited they couldn't be living different lifes if they tried. Beeny is a successful singer, and America has become involved with a terrorist organisation with the Judges watching.

Wagner and MacNeil explore what it's actually like to live in Mega-City One and how quickly lifes can turn to anger and terrorism. It's not about the future lawman, but the relationship between two ordinary citizens in a world ruled by Judges.

Where can you buy Judge Dredd: America in America?

It's available from branches of Barnes and Noble this month, as well as Amazon.com and comic book stores and the Diamond order code is JUN151496.
