An Accessible Comic by Good Comics - The Land of Uncertainty

Good Comics debuted a rather special comic at July's South London Comic and Zine Fair (SLCZF). An accessible comic, The Land of Uncertainty, by Hatiye Garip.

The Land of Uncertainty is a poetic and accessible comic book by Turkish artist Hatiye Garip. A beautifully illustrated poem about nature, the unvisited lands, and life's unexpected twists and turns weaves its way through a series of abstract images in this unique comic book.

In a first for Good Comics, the book makes use of tactile printing, with its images providing a sensory experience that brings the poetry and imagery of the book to life for blind and low-vision readers.

Good Comics has introduced a new audio version of their book in addition to the physical copy. The audio comic is produced by Paddy Johnston, who describes the book's contents in poetic detail. Ainé Kelly-Costello provides a reading of the book's poem and text contents with background music by Paddy and ambient sounds recorded by Hatiye to enhance the listening experience.

Last but not least, transcripts also accompany the audio comic.

The book was funded by an award from the US-based Accessible Comics Collective. Hatiye, a disabled artist, applied for the award in partnership with Good Comics and was successful along with a number of other comics creators. The majority of the winners focused on audio versions and digital accessibility solutions, with a small number exploring tactile printing.

After a long search, Good Comics was able to find a tactile printer to work with, and with guidance from the Collective and a number of experts, as well as input from blind and low-vision readers, they've created a comic book that can be accessed in a number of different ways and which provides a uniquely poetic reading experience.

"It was a challenging but unique opportunity to make my first comic book accessible! I'm so excited that the book is ready to meet its readers in both tactile print and audio comic bundle. I'm grateful to Good Comics and Paddy Johnston for opening this door, to the entire team who have been with me throughout the process, and to the Accessible Comics Collective for their support. I hope the door will be opened wide by many more people who want to get involved with accessible comics."

We're big supporters of creating something like this, bringing something new to the UK comics scene, and we hope to see many more tactile and accessible comics in the future.
