Blue and Orange by Eszter Simavari: Colossive Cartographies #72

Author: Ben Williams

Reading time: 1 minute

Blue and Orange by Eszter Simavari closes out Colossive Cartographies Series 12 with a burst of creative energy. Simavari, who describes herself as an 'investigator, interventor and innovator', brings her love of experimentation and collaboration to this final instalment, making it one of the series' most distinctive titles.

"One of my best ways to exist is in sketchbooks.
When you're not sure what to do next: sketchbook.
When you're not sure what colour: blue and orange."

Eszter's zine first took shape during a bookbinding workshop led by her friend and colleague Julie Macbean. Julie even screen‑printed the beautiful sheet music that now forms the zine's end‑papers, giving the project an extra handcrafted, personal touch.

Fellow 'creative adventurer' Vicky Graham helped Eszter transfer her positive and negative traced images of an orange onto a silk screen. The project then came together fully during a workshop led by fellow Colossive Cartographer Wallis Eates.

'I was feeling a bit directionless and started drawing blue lines,' says Eszter. 'Then suddenly this radiant orange mirage appeared out of the blue.'

What a cracking way to start 2026 for one of our favourite publishers. A fabulous way to round out Series 12.
