Commando Comics Briefing: Issues 5995-5998

Commando Comics issues 5995-5998 arrive on Thursday 24th September, and all four are landmark reprints picked for the run-up to Commando's 6000th issue. Each issue was a thousandth issue in its own right. No. 1000 is from 1976, No. 2000 from 1986, No. 3000 from 1996, and No. 4000 from 2007.
Issue 5998 is the standout. It was the 4000th issue of Commando, and opens in 1963 with four Allied airmen at the Los Angeles funeral of a Czechoslovakian pilot that none of them mourned. Close behind is 5995, Traitor From The Sky, which carries a cover by Ian Kennedy, the artist most closely associated with Commando Comics.

Commando 5995 (Home of Heroes): Traitor From The Sky
High over Austria, four men swung silently on their parachutes, tense and nervous. Already the operation was going wrong – their Dakota, hit by enemy fighters, was plunging in flames to the ground. They had only gotten out by the skin of their teeth, and now they were miles from their objective. Yes, they had problems. And they had one other big problem too. Although three of them didn't know it, the fourth man was an enemy agent.

Commando 5996 (Gold): Take Your Chance!
Be alert. Be ready for action. If a chance comes, take it! That's how you survive in times of war. More than once, Joe Carter had been in a seemingly hopeless situation. Each time, by sheer luck, he'd made it. But this time it looked really bad. He'd been captured by the Germans and was to play a vital role in a Nazi plot — as a dead man!

Commando 5997 (For Action and Adventure): Deadly Deal

Commando 5998 (Silver): Aces All!
In 1963, four Allied airmen from the Second World War meet at a funeral in Los Angeles. They don't know each other, but each man knew the deceased — Czechoslovakian ace Franz Nekovar. None of the men remembered Franz fondly — he may have been a damned fine pilot, deadly and skilled, but he was a maverick, and his disregard for the rules turned his peers against him.
