Desolation Wilderness

Desolation Wilderness is part of an ongoing project looking at landscape and memory. How the effects we have on the world and space around us have a profound affect on our own memory and emotions. Each landscape is a starting point to a bigger adventure as you look at what lays beyond the horizon.

Starting with Internal Wilderness, this is the second book in the series where Claire Scully  examines memory and imagination through visual ideas and explored the idea that within the space on each sheet of paper a world can be created either from a distant memory of a childhood holiday or from the desire to see parts of the world that for now are only dreamed about.

What you end up with is a journey though a desert location, experiencing it from a variety of perspectives, as if you were passing through it yourself. Time shifts and changes as a sense of shared exploration slowly builds.

Scully’s visuals offer ever changing vantage points and sense that you are stopping off at key points in the journey, with her careful and delicate use of colour adding to a definite sense of place and region. There’s a real beauty to the natural world in these pages and Desolation Wilderness asks questions of how the echoes of remembrance shape our perceptions and in so doing creates a truly unique graphic narrative experience.

Desolation Wilderness is presented to readers as, “a sequence of events occurring over a period of time in the search for a location in space.” It is a blending of the relationship between people and place. How we move through that space. While each landscape depicted on the pages of this comic is unique, they remain familiar. While readers know they are adventuring through the Desolation Wilderness, there is no indication of a specific location, and that's okay as you don't need a specific location. What you're doing is experiencing nature in a unique way, where humanity is on the horizon, out of reach. It's the environment away from humanity that's important.
