Fans asked for it, and it looks like fans are getting it. Netflix has ordered a standalone Punisher series, with Jon Bernthal reprising the role as Frank Castle after debuting as the character in Daredevil Season 2. Writer/producer Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) will act as showrunner, as well as writing the first two episodes.

"We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon's stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from Marvel's Daredevil," said Marvel's head of Television, Jeph Loeb. "Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot's compelling writing, we're thrilled to bring Marvel's The Punisher to Netflix."

Netflix's VP of Original Content Cindy Holland attributed the decision squarely to Bernthal's performance as the character in Daredevil.

"Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in Marvel’s Daredevil, and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot."

"For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn't be more excited to dive into his world. After watching Jon’s performance in Marvel's Daredevil I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own."

The Punisher marks the first new Marvel series ordered by Netflix following the initial announcement of their five series group deal: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron First and The Defenders. This is also likely to be a break from the five series, as the four main characters are scheduled to team-up for The Defenders, whilst it's unknown if Bernthal will be joining them.

No release date was given for The Punisher on Netflix.
