Review: Falcon #3
If you're looking for the only old-school A3-sized comic anthology that is absolutely stuffed with 32 pages of pure entertainment, then you need to be checking out Falcon #3, which has firmly beaten its funding goal on Kickstarter with time to spare. That's right, Sentinel Publications are back with another Falcon issue packed with a huge array of UK indie comics talent.
Created by the cream of UK indie talent, including Ed Doyle, Paul 'Deadeye' Dick, Mike Powell, Steve Matthews, Gavin Pollock, Stephen White, Sean Avery, Torgo Wells, Laurence Alison, Pete Howard, Andy Brown, Alan Holloway, Andy Hayes, Dave Metcalfe-Carr, James Roach, Wayne Hughes, Filippo, Woody, Slingsby, Andy Smith, Patrick Brown, Dan Pollard, Dan Goodfellow, Grant Richards, Chris Macauley, Def Equals Adder, Gary Whitlock.
This comic is suitable for readers of all ages and is printed on newspaper, similar to the classic EAGLE comic. It features a variety of strips, including action, light horror, science fiction, historical themes, and humour - there's truly something for everyone! There is also the long-awaited conclusion to Laurence Alison's "WHALERMEN."
There is some incredible art featured in this issue, which is to be expected with the talent on offer. The majority is black and white, which I will never complain about. But this is a true showcase of what is available in comics, with a wide range of styles and techniques used throughout. Some favourites include Torgo Wells' "Shoooter" and Patrick Brown's "Bubble, Bubble, Time and Trouble", which are vastly different but delightful to look at. What's impressive is I can't think of a single strip where there was something that wasn't to my liking, and there's usually one that isn't to my tastes. But not here!
The writing is equally as entertaining, with the majority of strips being contained to a single page. Some branch out over a few, and there are some continuations from the previous issues. Stories like "Text Me" or "Tammy's Troubles" by Alan Holloway, and "Anything Goes" by Stephen White provide some real hits, whilst not branching past the page. It's impressive how some short stories can leave such an impact, and like the art shows that we have a talented bunch of creators in the UK indie comic scene.
Falcon #3 is another brilliant representation of the incredible talent found within the UK indie comic scene. This anthology features a diverse, entertaining range of stories, some stunning artwork, and the nostalgic appeal of newspaper-style printing. Whether you're a long-time comic fan or a newcomer seeking some wonderful UK comic talent to follow, then Falcon #3 is a must-have addition to your collection. Make sure you check out the Kickstarter before it finishes!
