Review: Uncle Zaxlor's Robot Repair Shop

Author: Ben Williams

Reading time: 2 minutes

If you're looking for a comic that looks to capture some whimsical charm and intergenerational humour, then you need to check out the latest short comic by Leo Healy and Torgo Wells, "Uncle Zaxlor's Robot Repair Shop," after previously working together on the fun, extremely short So You've Been Conquered By The Human Race.

This all-ages sci-fi adventure transports you to the quirky planet of Zekrus. Uncle Zaxlor is not very diligent in his job and doesn't take his responsibilities seriously. When Zam arrives to spend the summer on Zekrus - where summers can last from two weeks to five years - he is confused by his uncle's laid-back attitude. However, Zam unexpectedly discovers a talent for fixing robots that could change their relationship forever and maybe even Uncle Zaxlor's fortunes.

So, let's start with the art. Torgo Wells has a lovely cartoon style. There's an edge of graffiti in the style, with some bold black lines and the use of white space effectively. Each page is four panels, which while offering consistency, also helms in what Wells can really achieve. A little variation now and again can be good. Thankfully, this doesn't hold the comic back, as every panel is beautifully drawn with some nice small additions to make re-reading a rewarding experience.

As for the writing, Leo Healy introduces us to the characters with a fun character set piece full of humour that sets the tone for the rest of the comic. They're instantly likeable despite having their flaws on full display - it helps when it's funny! There is a fair amount of dialogue in a relatively short comic, but it all flows quickly, thanks to being whimsical and fun. And there's so much room for development and future stories that I hope it becomes a thing. I need more Uncle Zaxlor's Robot Repair Shop in my life.

Uncle Zaxlor's Robot Repair Shop is off to a promising start. As Joe mentioned in his review of So You've Been Conquered By The Human Race, the team of Leo Healy and Torgo Wells combine to create comics that would be perfect for something like a 2000 AD Future Shock. The art is beautiful and fun, which lines up with the story. And there's a twist or two along the way that ramps up the entertainment value. At just £3.50 over at https://ellaitch.bigcartel.com/, it's an absolute gem of a comic, and I can't wait to see more from what could quickly become one of my favourite pairings in indie publishing!
