Smallfry: A Retro-Futuristic-Gothic Thriller Coming to Kickstarter
Reading time: 2 minutes
Smallfry is a Retro-Futuristic-Gothic Thriller set in the shadowy underbelly of 1986 New York. A place where Cold War secrets, psychic warfare, and vigilante horror collide. The charts the story of a defunct war robot and its cataclysmic legacy.

It tells the extraordinary tale of journalist Eddie Reynolds. Showing his unravelling of a shocking connection between a seemingly innocuous comic book, a clandestine Cold War robot directive, and a series of inexplicable vigilante killings. Created by indie artist Kevin Pickles, Smallfry is now gearing up for launch. Its pre-launch campaign is LIVE on Kickstarter right now, so fans of sci-fi comics need to check it out.

About Smallfry
Barely recovered from an alcoholic breakdown, Eddie is sent to interview Robert Sonoda Jr, a self-made comic artist who has just finished his magnum opus: Starchild. What starts as a routine interview with Sonoda Jr soon evolves into something more intriguing. Eddie starts to delve into the artist's relationship with his late scientist father. A man who was part of a team tasked with reviving a giant Cold War robot nicknamed "SMALLFRY" through the use of telekinesis and psyche-drugs.

Whilst Eddie is forced to confront his own demons, there appears to be more to Robert Sonoda Jr and his comic book than meets the eye. A killer is stalking the city's criminal lowlife, sucking out their brains and leaving the police helpless. A civil war in a foreign land is harbouring one of Smallfry's scientists and a new war droid.
Smallfry's creator, Kevin Pickles, had been a commercial artist for over a decade before recently heeding the call to commit to his path as a comic artist. He has produced freelance artwork for several small-scale comic publishers, including a short Japanese comic and a German graphic novel.

Kevin Pickles says: "Smallfry is the distillation of all of my creative and pop-cultural loves. As a child growing up in the 80s, I soaked up Saturday morning cartoons, the toys they were selling and, of course, anything Star Wars. When I got older and even more immersed in comics, I devoured all genres - from 1990s reprints of Manga to 1970s underground comics. I've channelled all of these influences, together with life-experiences - including my own struggles with alcohol - into this graphic novel."
"I've launched a crowdfund on Kickstarter to support my creation of Smallfry and its journey out into the world. I also hope to validate the years of struggle and sacrifice that I have put myself and my family through, laying the tracks for a brighter future, which I hope you will be part of. Your support will mean I can continue to draw comics and support my family through art.
"As an unknown artist, there are obvious risks, but Smallfry for me is all or nothing. If I don't draw another comic again, my only wish is that I have done this one, and left a lasting work."
Kevin's SMALLFRY campaign pre-launch build-up is LIVE on Kickstarter.
