David and Sarah's marriage is rocky after she has an affair. Seeking to save their relationship and make a go of a business of his own, David buys a boat at auction only to discover that Mary is anything but the vessel of hope he envisaged.
Director Michael Goi is primarily a cinematographer and it shows too, as Mary is extremely well lensed. His technical command of the camera is fully evidenced in the cramped confines of the cabins below deck, manoeuvring through every room and hold on the boat. Sadly, his skills do not extend to anything else, as he fails to generate any significant chills or sustained atmosphere which is a real shame, because the idea of a seductive spirit haunting a ship oozes potential.
Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer make the most of what they are given, and are as watchable as ever, but even they cannot elevate a script that fails to deliver anything other than a few jump scares. The ghost herself isn't a fully fleshed out character and is instead reduced to a flash here and there, until the films climax where she's revealed to be yet another J-horror ripoff.
