Wounds
Reading time: 1 minute
Director: Babak Anvari
Cast: Armie Hammer, Dakota Johnson, Zazie Beetz & Karl Glusman
Under the Shadow director Babak Anvari makes his English language debut with this Netflix original, and its a pretty intense 90 minutes.
Armie Hammer's bartender finds a mobile phone in the aftermath of a bar fight, and regrets unlocking it's contents. Hammer is a fine actor and his performance here is excellent, as a man whose mind begins to slowly unravel. As the film progresses he transforms from likeable but shallow dude, to emotionally fragile and finally into a total ass, but still maintains the characters core in glimpses, making you still root for him - you can feel the sweaty desperation.
The mobile phone delivers some genuine chills, from disturbing cries and hallucinations to creepy pictures, and a skin crawling moment when it turns into dozens of cockroaches.
There's some online references to the occult, with an Ringu type video of a tunnel that hypnotises Hammers girlfriend (Dakota Johnson) to such an extent, she ends up sitting a pool of her own pee.
Anvari expertly sustains an air of supernatural threat and psychological suspense throughout the films run-time, but unlike his debut Under the Shadow which only showed us glimpses of its evil being, Wounds is a much more visceral ride, complete with body horror, bugs and blood.
The Verdict 3/5
Wounds is available now on Netflix
