Lemire & Dodson Debut Teen Titans: Earth One

Esteemed author Jeff Lemire was formally announced as the writer of Teen Titans: Earth One. The Earth One line lets established creators find their own voice with DC characters without the constraints of editorial. Superman: Earth One and Batman: Earth One were both interesting first entries into the new line. At Emerald City Comic-Con DC announced the new Titans project to retailers, where CBR broke the news. Rachel Dodson is confirmed as the artist on the book that should make fans very excited to see Lemire really branching out from DC. This announcement in particular was very important to the future of the Earth One line, as no new material from the wave was produced in 2013. Many expected to see the long rumored Wonder Woman: Earth One by Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette come out this year, but that story has not yet been published. Here is Co-Publisher of DC Comics Dan Didio on how the line is evolving and what the release schedule will look like.
I think it's very important, because it allows us to tell stories with our primary characters at a different style and pace than we normally do in the periodicals. When you're reading books in 20-page increments, or a little bit more than that, there's a certain style of storytelling, a certain expectation per issue. But when you're telling a full, complete story, you have a chance to really roll it out and really build to major crescendos, and take your time to develop bits and pieces of the characters in a way that really is much more expansive than allowed in the regular periodicals.
We're trying to be much more selective when we do original graphic novels. If you look back to when I first got here, and we were producing a lot of Prestige Format books -- we were churning out a lot of them, and they were a higher price point, and they were supposed to have a higher level of quality than what was going on in the regular line. But when you produce too much of that, it all starts to water itself down.
Here we want to be very selective, and try to find the right teams for the right characters.
The publisher also stated when readers can expect to see more Earth One material.
The only one Earth One book you'll see in 2014 will be "Teen Titans."
Author Jeff Lemire had some really interesting statements regarding how he is going to treat the book going forward.
It's allows two things that I love. First of all, it's a graphic novel, not a monthly serialized comic, so it allows you to tell one big story with a beginning, middle and end -- almost like a film. That's where I came from: graphic novels, with "Essex County" and my all other books. It's a format I embrace. And to tell one big superhero story, in that format, is something that you don't often get to do because most things are serialized.
The other big aspect is that it is free of all continuity and all backstory. It's not tied in with anything else, so it allows you to literally display all of these concepts down to their core and start fresh and take them in new and unexpected directions while still being true to that core concept. Not having to worry about 50 other writers and what they're doing. The freedom is pretty exhilarating.
Look for Teen Titans: Earth One sometimes this year.
