Is a Justice League film in the works?

Apparently last year whilst Marvel and Disney were working on bringing us the epic Avengers movie, Warner Bros have been quietly working on pulling together a Justice League movie. The amazing success of the Avengers isn't meant to be the reason for this, it's not a reaction to the success that you can have pulling all these superheroes together into a massive film - it was in anticipation of the film doing well (how could it not do well with Joss Whedon in control?). Warner Bros are meant to be looking towards lining up "Gangster Squad" writer Will Beall to pen a new "Justice League" script.

A Justice League movie was meant to be in the works a few years ago, but that obviously never happened. Who would star in the film superhero wise would be up for debate, but it's surely safe to say that you can expect to see the four guys above along with Wonder Woman.

Who would star in the roles though? Christian Bale has said that he isn't doing any more Batman films. Will Henry Cavill could still do Superman, but then you'd have to go the route that Marvel did with the Avengers and start to plant the seeds of a much larger film which, from all reports I've ever seen, Christopher Nolan has no interest in crossing the two films over at all.

Back in 2010 Nolan had this to say:

Marvel are doing what they do and people will respond to that really well, or they won't. It's not something I ever really applied a blanket rule to, but Marvel characters are very different to DC characters, and the key DC characters are very different to the minor DC characters. You've got to go back to that element of, 'What do I see when I close my eyes and think of Batman? What do I see when I close my eyes and think of Superman?' And for me a big part of that is their individuality. They are extraordinary beings in an ordinary world. And the reason I think the two are fascinating is because Superman is very specifically super powered and obviously otherworldly; Batman is very human and flawed. They're two very different characters, but there's an elemental feeling of power in the iconography of those characters. To me that's originally because they stood alone. I need to hang on to that in my imagining of them.

Assuming that Nolan does more than on Superman film, although that will likely depend on the success of the film, I'd say it's unlikely that Cavill will be Superman. Which means that if Warner Bros do go ahead with a Justice League movie, we'd nto only have a new Batman, but also a new Superman. And they'd be seperate from all the films that have been done so far, or at least not properly linked. It makes you wonder how they're going to build up to the film, as no doubt part of Marvels and Disneys success with the Avengers is that it has been built over many films to the point that the anticipation for it was much bigger than if they'd just announced that they were doing a film with no build.

Oh, and if they go ahead with the film, I hope that Darkseid is the villian. You've got to have someone that can stand up against Superman, Green Lantern, etc.
