Marvel's Top 5 most Sinister Event Teasers!

Time travel stories are abundant in both of the DC and Marvel right now. Each publication line is steeped deep into the land of wonky timelines thrown out of whack, worlds colliding, along with cosmic-based event supernovas. Marvel has been at the forefront of this with their recent time travel images skewing around past events being repurposed. Here are a few events that we are eager to go back to during the upcoming Secret Wars event from Marvel in 2015 out of what they announced based on how the publisher teased their upcoming tales. Here are five of the most dangerously controversial teasers that the publisher has shown in the past couple of weeks.

5) Renew Your Vows

While it will likely not be permanent, having the idea of Peter Parker getting a sweet ending with Mary Jane where he is happy forever is a lovely idea. One that will make fans forever pine that this was the real version of Parker and friends. Peter and Mary have been through literal hell together, and escaped nightmare after nightmare of horrific deaths and rebirths culminating in important ways in which the Universes keep changing. Watching a content Mary and Peter complete with Mayday Parker, if only for a moment, is a small bit of respite that Peter has fought for and deserved for decades of superheroics. Hopefully the creators behind this event will also pay off the rest of the plot threads in the story by giving other characters moments of solace in the supporting cast. Harry Osborn in particular needs the spotlight shone on him to see whether the hero turned villain is dead or alive. The potential for this story is limitless, and Mayday Parker, if it is truly her, will hopefully get the final say in the story as she is the future of Spider-Man.

4) Civil War

While Civil War is a polarizing story for many reasons, it would be interesting to explore the story from a completely different angle. Without the inciting incident of Peter taking his mask off or even the shooting of Captain America, this story could have played out completely differently. After the first Iron Man film, our perspective on Tony Stark has completely changed. The nuances that would have brought him to this new place are changing. Re-working this story and fleshing it out with new motivations, could make it one of the strongest events that Marvel has ever published; and now that on-screen Marvel is changing the story almost completely with a new void between Stark and Rogers, we know that the film version of this story is going to mix things up completely differently. Also teased on the cover is a return to Peter in the Scarlet Spider suit with different continuity implications, or perhaps bringing Ben Reilly back to the spider-Universe, there could be some seriously interesting new ways to tell a Civil War event without just a simple continuity parallel.

3) Age of Ultron vs. Marvel Zombies

Another one that could possibly be worrisome is Age of Ultron vs. Marvel Zombies. The prospects of returning toward two concepts that have worn quite thin are a little more than alarming at this point. Age of Ultron had serious issues of pacing and characterization along with a plot that prevented from being the vent it should have been. The first few issues of the tale spent too much time in a generic Marvel Universe filled with post-apocalyptic tinges that were far too similar from X-Men events that have covered that ground much more effectively. In addition, when the story finally hit the gas, it did so with more versions of futures that seemed equally uninspired with a weird vengeance ploy. Marvel Zombies had a wildly entertaining first storyline, but wore thin after repeated plays to venture further into that world. The book was so silly at points that it bordered on cheese. Putting both of these stories together is a little more than troublesome for the reasons listed above. However, with the right idea, plot, and execution, I believe gold can still be mined out of some these ideas.

2) Ultimate Universe: The End

This is another teaser that is incredibly dangerous. Marvel has been teasing the end of the Ultimate Universe with each and every event that they have hosted there for the past couple of years starting with Ultimatum published in 2009. Rumors and speculation have been flying hard and fast over the past couple of months regarding the complete end of the Ultimate U, and this teaser only serves to further exasperate the end of the upcoming Marvel teaser that is likely going to send fans completely over the edge. With all the books, except for Ultimate Spider-Man, now being cancelled in the line once again, many likely are not sure what the publisher is going to do next with their other characters in their staple of villains and heroes within the Ultimate Universe. Marvel has some plans for this world; it’s just a matter of waiting for those plans to finally be revealed. Ultimate Universe: The End could just possibly be the end that we have all been wondering about after all this time. It could be the next big piece of Marvel Continuity that fans have been agonizing for.

1) X-Men ‘92

 

At first glance, this sounds confounding. Why would fans be outraged over the return of an X-Men series that isn’t in continuity anymore? These perceptions need to be shelved. Over the past couple of years, Marvel has been driving the X-Men franchise forward with Professor Xavier in a completely different role. They have been paving the way for big continuity shifts that are organically happening for the franchise. They might just get tempted to bring Xavier back after publishing this piece of X-Men continuity. Bringing the X-Men back from where they were would put them right back in the shadow of what Chris Claremont has done all those years ago. Keeping the past X-Men where they are, and maintaining the shifting status quo of that franchise has never been more important than right now. Devaluing or even teasing fans with Xavier again is downright cruel. The X-Men franchise needs to maintain the forward momentum that was ushered in via All-New X-Men and the rest of all those great franchises.
