Review: The Void by Martin Simpson
If you're looking for a comic that is as haunting as it is visually stunning, then you absolutely need to check out The Void by Martin 'SIMO' Simpson. A new mini-comic from the creator of NORD that will leave you eagerly anticipating his next comic, RASP, purely because you need more SIMO comics in your life.
The Void follows Major Thomas P. Jeffries, who volunteered to investigate an anomalous spatial event. 45 information-gathering probes have been sent in and failed to relay any meaningful information. There are great risks involved, but Control HQ needs a more effective investigation - they need to send someone in there. This is the story of how that goes.
Martin's art is always gorgeous. It's no surprise that it doesn't change here. It's a very distinct style that looks incredible in sci-fi comics. For this story, though, the style also draws you into the story. Into the Void. It is always enjoyable when the art can take centre stage and pulls you in without the need for words, letting you feel the emotion and passing of time as though you are in the pilot seat.
Through the art, you can feel the cramped and suffocating nature of the probe ship and what he is going through. If you get claustrophobia, then you'll feel this even more. You feel and understand the sense of feeling trapped and alone before feeling released. The Major, and in turn, you, are no longer trapped and confined to this cramped and lonely space. It's beautifully and hauntingly told through the art, whilst combining expertly with the storytelling.
It comes together to create a story that makes you feel and think. There is one character in this story, and I think most people can empathise with him thanks to the COVID lockdown. As you follow him into the Void, you can feel his desperation and loneliness as time passes. His connection to Control is lost, so he really is all alone with his thoughts. It's a dark, isolated, cramped place that feels on his anxiety as he strives to endure whilst contemplating the infinite around him. If the art doesn't draw you in enough, the story certainly will.
The Void is a masterful blend of haunting visuals and storytelling that immerses readers in a deeply emotional journey. Martin Simpson's art style evokes a visceral response, making you feel every moment of Major Jeffries' isolation and desperation. I really don't think I can praise this enough. To pack so much feeling and emotion into a mini-comic is special. The Void is an absolute must-read. A must own. And you only have a few days left to pre-order it over at his Esty store. It's a limited edition comic, so don't wait - you only have until the 9th of September. Treat yourself. Treat someone you know. Just buy this and enjoy. It's worth it.
