Scottish Comic Book Day 2025: Celebrating 200 Years of Comics in Scotland
Reading time: 1 minute
Scottish Comic Book Day 2025 takes place on the last Saturday of November, celebrating Scotland's rich legacy in comics. The talent coming out of Scotland is seriously impressive. First inaugurated in 2021 and recognised by both the UK and Scottish Parliaments, the annual event shines a spotlight on the creativity and influence of Scottish artists and writers. Scottish Comic Book Day falls on the last Saturday of November every year.

From the Glasgow Looking Glass to today's vibrant creators, Scottish Comic Book Day 2025 is a chance to honour the past while inspiring the future.
It was 200 years ago that the groundbreaking Glasgow Looking Glass was published. It is often hailed as the world's first modern comic. The first issue of the magazine was published on 11 June 1825. Produced fortnightly, it was printed by John Watson, one of Glasgow's early lithographic printers. After five issues, its name was changed to the Northern Looking Glass to better reflect a more national coverage of events in Scotland. The final issue of this series appeared on 3 April 1826.
This year, Scotland hosts two events celebrating comics. In the East, La Belle Adventure in Edinburgh is hosting a talk with artist Gustaffo Vargas (Nullhunter, X-Men). In the West, Paisley Central Library features underground comics duo Dave Alexander (MacBam Brothers, Commando) and Jim Stewart (Ganjaman) as they converse with comic historian John McShane.
Whether you make it to either of these events or not, please post about Scottish Comic Book Day on your social media page. Tag posts with #scbd or #ScottishComicBookDay. The Scottish comic scene deserves celebration. Some of the very best writers, artists, and publishers over the past few years have come from Scotland. We want to see more of that.
