Kit Anderson's Second Shift, published by Avery Hill, has been shortlisted for a Nebula Award for Graphic Novels. This is big news — not just for Kit Anderson and Avery Hill, but for comics as a whole. The Nebula Awards are run by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA). For the first time in 2026, they have added a graphic novel category. Second Shift is one of the finalists. It is a sci-fi story about AI and the blurred lines between the real world and the mind.

The story follows Birdie Doran. She works alone at Terracorp's remote outpost. To pass the time, she dips into virtual reality while doing repairs and routine checks. Then she finds an abandoned station nearby. It makes her question everything — her memories, her sense of being alone, and what her life really means.
Kit Anderson says, "I've rummaged through the annual lists of Nebula Award finalists for a long time―they've introduced me to many of my favourite writers, and I'm honestly struggling to believe I'll see my own book included when I go through the list again this year. I'm so grateful that Second Shift has been nominated for the Nebula Award in the inaugural comics category."

"The Nebula Award's introduction of the graphic novel category is a major milestone for the medium," says Avery Hill Publisher Ricky Miller. "Comics has some of the best science fiction and fantasy stories in the world, and their long-awaited recognition by SFWA will connect them to new readers. We're delighted that Kit Anderson's fantastic debut graphic novel that tackles important questions about AI and reality has been recognised."
The Nebula Award winners will be named in the first week of June. The full list of finalists is available here.
