Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Cast: Zoe Margaret Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrahams & Dean Norris

Director:  André Øvredal

I suspect that those - like myself - who are unfamiliar with novelist Alvin Schwartz's source material, won't get as much out of talented director André Ovredal's (Troll Hunter) screen adaption as those who are. However, it's still an effectively creepy 107 mins that represents a perfect gateway movie for teens to get into the horror genre.

The performances of the teen leads are uniformly strong and engagingly humorous at times too, and reminiscent of those recently seen in the IT saga.

The array of monsters that stalk our heroes are unsettling creations, with each seemingly creepier than the last. Indeed, the finest of these the Jangly Man, is saved for the films tense climax. A contorting, scuttling beast that's literally able to fall apart, his appearance is a true highlight and a monster not easier forgotten.

More seasoned horror fans may have chosen to give this one a miss or bemoan a lack of gore, but it really is an atmospheric piece worth catching.

The Verdict: 3.5/5
