Don't expect an Avengers videogame until the right developer partner is found says Marvel

Let's be honest; comic-book licensed videogames haven't exactly had the best track record when it comes to critical reception, or, really anysort of qualitative measurement.

Still, that hasn't stopped the money-grabbing, myriad-tentacled, Cthonic beast that is videogames publishing from doing its thing; crapping out a half-baked game based on the popular licensed property of the moment and robbing unsuspecting folks of their hard-earned scratch in the process.

Marvel in particular, have been the perpetrators of some especially wretched video game tat.  Specifically, the likes of the god-awful Spider-Man games (oh Neversoft, what happened to you and your great Spiderman games from the PSOne era?), those vile X-Men tie-ins (X-Men Origins was awful and you know it) and the recent glut of MCU-themed free-to-play garbage on mobile platforms that make you want to give yourself a lobotomy with a rusty spoon.

Thankfully, according to an interview done over on IGN, Marvel look ready to put the breaks to this torrent of licensed cack where the Avengers license is concerned.  Indeed, Head of Games, TQ Jefferson, told the site that the reason why we haven't seen a new Avengers title since that god-awful Battle for Earth garbage which came out a year or two ago, is simply because the comic-book giant doesn't want to get burned like that again.

"The Avengers game will come when we have the right partner, that has the right vision, that has the time to develop a strong, competitive triple-A title," Jefferson said. "It has to hit our three pillars: Fun and engaging gameplay, true to the characters, compelling story ... Gamers, they know better. They're not going to flock to something that's sub-par."

Obviously, its a little too late for Jefferson's promise to bear fruit with the recently released Amazing Spider-Man 2 tie-in, but at least the intention is there to make a difference even if the proof isn't quite in the pudding yet.

DC struck gold with their Batman: Arkham games and developer Rocksteady, now presumably Marvel are looking to do the same as their silver-screen output grows in both quality and profile.

But no matter what Marvel make, they'll never make anything as vile as Superman 64.

So y'know, there's always that.
