B.P.R.D. To Renumber From #100
Not so long ago DC Comics renumbered 52 comic arcs back to issue one. Now it's Dark Horses turn to renumber, although on a much, much smaller scale and not to issue one. Instead we start at #100 from October! You might think it's odd to start at 100, but really there's some good reasoning for this renumbering.
The B.P.R.D. series began in 2003 as a Hellboy spinoff and in October we get the 100th issue and will be released with the title B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth #100 with the subtitle "Return Of The Master, Part 3 of 5". Just like Mignola's Hellboy, B.P.R.D. has been popularly described as "an ongoing series of miniseries," and the with the miniseries constantly starting again at #1 series editor Scott Allie has moved to avoid any confusion to new fans when looking to start following the B.P.R.D.
Beginning to make sense now right? There are loads of #1's out there and most people wouldn't know where to start. The only loose end is when people who are new to the series start looking for #99 which technically doesn't exist as it'll be listed as B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth Return Of The Master #2. Apart from that though it's a great idea and shows that it will be a proper ongoing series that fans can pick up and read in the correct sequence. In a few months though it'll all be fine. If only the 100th issue had landed at the beginning of a story arc for now.
Where's this all heading though? The end, that's where.
Where we're heading with this is simple: the end. There have been a lot of prophecies, a lot of omens, in the Hellboy books, including B.P.R.D. and all of this, and the omens have not been good. The idea is not that the reader can have a perfectly clear vision of where this is all heading -- a lot of interpretation goes into these prophecies, and a lot of the interpreters are wrong. But we are stepping things up and heading to the big payoff. The slogan for B.P.R.D. this year was, "It's all going to hell in 2012." Well, then what? Then you're in Hell for a long, long time, and our guys have to deal with that. Things have gone too far for them to hit the reset button and say, "Phew, handled that, all better now." Readers are going to see how things in Hellboy, Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien, even Witchfinder, will just keeping coming together more and more over time.
