Flowers in the Dustbin Launches Today - A Punk-Era Graphic Epic Begins
Reading time: 1 minute
Flowers in the Dustbin launches today as a brand-new Patreon-only comic by Freaktown Comics. The UK's early punk scene has always been a breeding ground for raw energy, rebellion, and reinvention. That spirit is roaring back to life in Flowers in the Dustbin courtesy of Russell Hillman and artist Jordan Diamant.

Scripted by Coventry-based writer Russell Hillman, Flowers in the Dustbin follows a struggling 1970s South London punk band whose story is as heartfelt as it is loud. At its centre is Lola, a trans woman fronting the band Slagheap, alongside Terry, Lloyd, and Simon. What began as background research for another project quickly evolved into a fully fledged, deeply researched 212‑page epic exploring found family, identity, and the fight against intolerance.
Hillman brings decades of small‑press experience to the project. He's a vocal supporter of trans rights and has been determined to get this story right. The book's emotional core is strengthened by the creative team around him. The script was created along with Harry Saxon, the colourist on Slashermania. And Tyler Hartley added extra guidance with the final draft.
Artist Jordan Christopher Diamant, a veteran transgender creator known for Melting Pot Riot, brings authenticity and grit to every page. Lettering comes from long‑time collaborator Sergio Calvet, whose work spans everything from sci‑fi adventures to indie webcomics.
Readers can dive into the opening pages for free on Patreon right now. Ongoing updates will be available to subscribers. Every membership directly supports Diamant's art. It's a rare and refreshing model that puts the illustrator at the heart of the project. Props to Hillman for that!
If you're a fan of punk history, character‑driven storytelling, or simply want to support bold, inclusive indie comics, Flowers in the Dustbin deserves a spot on your radar. This is punk with purpose. You can find follow-along on the Flowers in the Dustbin Patreon here.
