New To Kickstarter: The United - Going Underground

Author: Ben Williams

Reading time: 2 minutes

The United: Going Underground is a new comic from Scottish cartoonist Jonny Cannon that launched on the 4th of August on Kickstarter. It tells the story of two detectives, a retired superhero turned celebrity yogi and a man with a magical chimpanzee costume, all trying to solve a murder.

What seems a straightforward case spirals downwards rapidly into a sinister, psychedelic nightmare.

The United: Going Underground cover

This is a fully developed story that takes place in a tumultuous Britain and the Republic of Scotland following the dissolution of the United Kingdom. It's a weird place with superheroes, druidic science-magic, aristocratic revolutionaries, hipster gangsters and duplicitous politicians.  (At least one of those things exists in real life.)

The goal of this campaign is to raise funds for the printing of a 144-page, hardcover comic book that features black and white artwork with grey tones. To support this project, please visit the Kickstarter campaign page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/theunited/the-united-going-underground.

This comic crosses genres, blending superhero action-adventure, suspense, crime noir, horror and romance.  A satirical streak and dark humour runs through the story. There is a large cast of weird and wonderful characters, some of whom appeared in Cannon's previous comic book, The United: Welcome to the Shitshow.

The reward tiers include sketches, commissions and original art.

You can see more examples of Cannon's sketches and commissions on his Instagram page. Digital copies of the comic are also available from the Kickstarter campaign.

All international orders (outside the UK) of the hard copy reward tiers will receive a free A5 illustration. This is to offset higher shipping rates.
